Relationships in a World of Individualism

  • rWorld

The rWorld is about more than Dale Kuehne's book Sex and the iWorld.
The rWorld is a New England based, non-profit (in formation), that is composed of a growing number of people and organizations from many faith and ideological backgrounds worldwide. We believe that much of the fulfillment for which women and men are looking can be found by enhancing the quality of our relationships. While the individual freedom we enjoy in the West is a gift, the love and intimacy for which humans yearn will not be found in self-serving materialism or hedonism, but in a variety of healthy relationships.

Professor of Politics and The Richard L. Bready Chair for Ethics, Economics, and the Common Good at Saint Anselm College, Manchester, NH.

In this blog I'm highlighting signposts of the world in which we presently reside as a means of helping promote a civil, and meaningful dialogue about what kind of world in which we wish to live. I am particularly interested in exploring how might we reconcile the individual good and the common good, and where reconciliation isn’t possible, which should take precedence and why.

Guaranteed Adultery and Immanuel Kant

Posted by Dale Kuehne on August 2, 2011

The owner of a guaranteed adultery website is reaffirming his marriage vows?

Is there a problem here?

Many in the iWorld would say its OK so long as everything is consensual.

But is it? Let’s consider Immanuel Kant and his concept of the Categorical Imperative. Taking the risk of simplifying the concept too much, one corollary of it would be:

Don’t behave in an activity that if everyone behaved in the same way it would make the activity impossible.

For example, Don’t lie. because if everyone lied, no one would believe a lie.

In this instance, Don’t commit adultery, because if everyone did, marriage would disappear and so would adultery.

The question is not if the iWorld is appealing, but if it is sustainable.

show me yours
and i’ll show you mine

dial tone and ringin
connect and on
im on the hotline
and talking now
so shut your mouth
i know just what i want
and that someone is you
paint brush strokin
in the sinful art of lust
the picture becomes clear
no time to think twice
no time for regret
and one things for sure
this one’s for me

i’m falling in love
with the thrill of the kill
and at this masquerade
you’re the clown and criminal

i will be the devil
in your land of make believe
tell me how the view is
down there on your knees
as you beg and plead

knee deep in the hot wax
all stuck in the quicksand
sexual slave
you’ve learned your lessons well
don’t pause for applause
my bloody valentine
with a slip of the tongue
i’m on the inside
snap the neck of self control
and it breaks like prison bread
straightjacket seduction
it whipsers like the voice in your ear
you opened up the flood gates
and i’m drowning in your love
you opened up the flood gates
its to late to turn back

i’m falling in love
with the thrill of the kill
and at this masquerade
you’re the clown and criminal

i will be the devil
in your land of make believe
tell me how the view is
down there on your knees
on your knees

adultery
i have become a danger to myself
a danger to myself
now that i’m in the palm of your hand
the palm of your hand
i have betrayed my family
betrayed my family
committed in sin adultery
and i can’t stop now
i can’t stop now

i’m falling in love
with the thrill of the kill
and at this masquerade
you’re the clown and criminal

i will be the devil
in your land of make believe
tell me how the view is
down there on your knees
on your knees

One Response to “Guaranteed Adultery and Immanuel Kant”

  1. In the article, the owner of the Web site says (regarding using his site for adultery):
“If you want to find the right level of success, we think there is the commitment level you need to make, and if it doesn’t work out for you then we’ll give you your money back.”

So… he is saying that you have to make a commitment to adultery to make it a success! Skewed thinking for sure. What about that other commitment… to one’s marriage?
