Relationships in a World of Individualism

  • rWorld

The rWorld is about more than Dale Kuehne's book Sex and the iWorld.
The rWorld is a New England based, non-profit (in formation), that is composed of a growing number of people and organizations from many faith and ideological backgrounds worldwide. We believe that much of the fulfillment for which women and men are looking can be found by enhancing the quality of our relationships. While the individual freedom we enjoy in the West is a gift, the love and intimacy for which humans yearn will not be found in self-serving materialism or hedonism, but in a variety of healthy relationships.

    Sex & the iWorld

Professor of Politics and The Richard L. Bready Chair for Ethics, Economics, and the Common Good at Saint Anselm College, Manchester, NH.

In this blog I'm highlighting signposts of the world in which we presently reside as a means of helping promote a civil, and meaningful dialogue about what kind of world in which we wish to live. I am particularly interested in exploring how might we reconcile the individual good and the common good, and where reconciliation isn’t possible, which should take precedence and why.

As the breeze rises (Love in the rWorld, Part 2)

Continued from Friday …

So if the rWorld is based on love, what is love?

I must make a confession at this point.

I don’t love well.

I vacillate between being a frustrated lover, a frustrating lover, and a failed lover.

I have come to see that in and of myself I cannot love well.

And trying harder will not make the difference I want it to make.

This is not because I am a bad person. It is simply that humans are not created with the capacity to love by ourselves.

There is no such thing as iLove.

That is why the iWorld is so vacuous.

Love is, in its essence, a relational activity and not a solitary activity.

It is also divine.

Literally.

God is love.

All love comes from God.

We can be the conduits of love.

But we cannot love without God

We can be nice.

We can redefine love to create a counterfeit called love that we can do.

But we cannot love without God.

All love comes from God.

What is love in the rWorld?

It is loving God with all that you are and loving your neighbor as yourself.

The rWorld is the living out of the trinity of love:

Loving God
Loving Self
Loving Neighbor

does this mean you have to be religious to be a citizen of the rWorld??
